AVIF Is the Newest Format, Which Is Exactly the Problem
AVIF came out of the AV1 video codec and is the most efficient still-image format in mainstream use — typically 20–30% smaller than WebP and around half the size of a comparable JPEG. It also handles 10- and 12-bit colour, HDR, wide colour gamuts, and transparency, which is a genuinely impressive combination.
Browsers adopted it quickly, and that is where the trouble starts. Websites now serve AVIF, so you save an image and end up with a file that your operating system, your editor, and most upload forms have never heard of. Windows needs an extension from the Store, macOS support arrived only recently, and a great deal of desktop software has no decoder at all.
What Survives the Conversion, and What Does Not
Transparency comes through intact, because PNG has a full alpha channel. That matters for the logos, icons, and cut-out product images that are increasingly served as AVIF.
Colour depth does not fully survive. If the AVIF stores 10- or 12-bit colour or HDR metadata, the output here is standard 8-bit PNG, which is what browsers and most editors expect. For ordinary photographs and graphics this is invisible; for HDR photography it is a real reduction, and you would want a professional tool for that case.
Expect the PNG to be several times larger. AVIF is aggressive lossy compression and PNG is lossless storage, so the size gap between them is the widest of any pair on this site.
