Why WAV Files Are So Enormous

WAV stores audio as raw samples with no compression at all. CD-quality stereo — 44,100 samples per second, 16 bits each, two channels — works out to about 10 MB per minute, or 600 MB for an hour. Studio files at 48 kHz and 24-bit are half again larger.

That is the point of the format. Every sample is exactly what the microphone or synthesiser produced, which is what you want while recording, editing, and mixing. It is emphatically not what you want when emailing a rough mix to someone or putting a file on a phone.

What You Lose, and When It Matters

MP3 throws away sound the encoder predicts you will not notice: frequencies masked by louder ones, content above the range most people hear, and detail in quiet passages next to loud ones. At 192 kbps and above this is inaudible on normal playback for most material.

Where it does matter is if the MP3 will be edited further. Each lossy encode compounds the damage, so keep the WAV as your working master and treat the MP3 as a delivery copy. Converting back to WAV later restores the file size but not the discarded audio.

Picking a Bitrate

320 kbps is the MP3 maximum and the right choice when the WAV is a finished master you care about. 192 kbps is a sensible default for general listening at roughly 60% of the size. 128 kbps is fine for speech, podcasts, and voiceover. Below that, artefacts become obvious on music.

Where the Enormous WAV Files Come From

Most people do not create WAV files deliberately — they inherit them. Audio recorders and field recorders write WAV because it is the safest format to capture into. Digital audio workstations export it because it is the standard interchange format between tools. Voice-over and podcast recording software defaults to it. Windows sound recorders and older telephony systems produce it.

In every case the format is doing its job at the moment of capture, when you want absolutely nothing thrown away. It stops being appropriate the moment the file has to travel — over email, onto a phone, into a web player, or through an upload form with a size cap.

Bit Depth, Sample Rate, and What Survives

WAV files carry two properties that MP3 handles differently, and it is worth knowing what happens to them.

Bit depth — commonly 16-bit for CD quality or 24-bit for studio work — describes how finely each sample is measured. MP3 has no concept of bit depth at all; it stores the audio in a completely different way, so a 24-bit source is not preserved as 24-bit and does not need to be. The extra depth mattered during recording and mixing, where it protects against noise building up across edits.

Sample rate is preserved where sensible. A 48 kHz recording, which is standard for video work, stays at 48 kHz; a 96 kHz studio file is brought down, since MP3 does not benefit from it and no consumer playback chain does either.

How much smaller will the file be?

Roughly ten times at 128 kbps and about four times at 320 kbps. An hour of CD-quality WAV drops from around 600 MB to 55 MB or 145 MB respectively.

Does converting to MP3 lose quality?

Yes, by design — MP3 is lossy. At 192 kbps and above the difference is inaudible for most listeners on most material, but it is a genuine one-way conversion.

Can I get the WAV back afterwards?

You can convert MP3 back to WAV, but that only restores the file size. The audio the encoder discarded is gone permanently. Always keep the original WAV.

Which bitrate should I use for a podcast?

128 kbps mono or stereo is standard for speech and keeps episodes small enough to stream comfortably.

Is there a length limit?

Browser memory is the constraint rather than duration. Very long recordings may need desktop software.

Should I convert before or after editing?

After. Keep the WAV as your working master through every edit, and produce the MP3 only as the final delivery step. Editing an MP3 and re-exporting compounds the compression damage.

Does mono or stereo matter for size?

Considerably. Mono at a given bitrate is effectively double the quality per channel, so a spoken-word recording at 96 kbps mono can sound better than 128 kbps stereo while being smaller.

Does my 24-bit WAV lose something in the conversion?

Bit depth is not carried into MP3, because MP3 stores audio in an entirely different way. The extra depth was doing its job during recording and mixing, not during playback.
